Sustainable Thinking

ECOLOGICAL

Before we could act, we need to first ‘think sustainably’. Genuinely feel bad about your ecological footprint. Some of us realize but do not act. But some don’t even realize so how will they act. So, the first step is we need to start thinking sustainably and all of us have a duty towards our planet. Everyone has to act in whatever capacity, as individuals first.

Feel bad / feel guilty if you can choose and afford an ecologically sensitive option and still buy usual, routine ecologically harmful stuff without thinking. Feel bad before taking a polybag from any vendor, feel bad for not segregating waste for not recycling whatever could be recycled, feel bad if water is leaking from your taps / water tanks, feel bad if unnecessary electric lights, fans, gadgets are running in your homes and offices.

Many times, we see in our offices, lights are on of a conference room or a cabin even if no, one is using it, I always tried to switch it off. In offices many people think it is not my job, I did not switch it on or I do not have to pay the electricity bill. An office boy would do it; it does not affect me. But in reality, it affects each one of us whether we see it in that way or not. The thing is if you feel bad about wastage of resources wherever and whenever - you will act, so please act. There would be hundreds of examples. Just don’t stop at feeling bad, act to correct it slowly and gradually and try to correct it every time till it becomes a habbit. Switching off a button is very easy, just do it.

You may have the luxury of uninterrupted water supply or electricity, you can afford it, but you are not ENTITLED to waste it. There are many who don’t have the basics, but you may also not have it in future if you waste it. When there is a power cut or no water supply for one day due to maintenance etc., we automatically start using water or electricity judiciously. Why? Because we are worried even back-up or inverter will not be able to supply for more than few hours; or water tank would not last more than a day. Using everything irrespective of the cost and availability judiciously should be our way of life – that will lead to sustainability in our lives. I have tried to implement few sustainable steps, my family has implemented few, still need to do more but at least all of us should make a beginning. Every action results from an idea or thought and every action starts with an individual, with you and me.

So sustainable thinking will lead to sustainable action! So, let us embrace it and inculcate it – each one of us! Right now!

Keep reading various sections of the website and you will find out about many simple, doable actions which many of you may be knowing but may have not started yet.
